In a nutshell: If you enjoyed the multiplayer mode in Ratchet & Clank 3 then this is going to be right up your star system. It’s basically Annihilation Nation expanded to make a full game with a proper story mode and both split screen and online multiplayer. Its in the latter mode that Ratchet & Clank really shines. The lowdown: Finally shedding any pretence of being a platformer this new game has more in common with Unreal Tournament 2004 than it does Super Mario. Ratchet (Clank really isn’t in it much) has been press ganged into an ultra violent game show where he has to destroy everything in his path in order to pull in the ratings.

To help him, he’s got a huge range of customisable weapons and a small pool of vehicles. The single player is perfectly fun on its own but the real draw is the co-operative mode and the online multiplayer with its myriad of different modes and options. Most exciting moment: Sitting atop a spider tank and commanding your army of bots to annihilate your best friend online.
